10.1016/j.scispo.2016.04.010The Effects of Drinking Hydrogen-Rich Water on Active Athletes
Consuming hydrogen-rich water helps improve athletic performance and promotes faster post-workout recovery. Thanks to hydrogen-rich water, heart rate returns to normal more quickly after high-intensity training. The main reason for this is hydrogen-rich water’s ability to regulate blood pH. This is the conclusion of a pilot study involving a total of 8 female judo athletes.What was the purpose of the study?
The study was conducted to examine the effects of hydrogen-rich water consumption in female athletes. It tracked acid-base balance (an important indicator of overall health) and the athletes’ recovery following high-intensity exercise. The participants were between the ages of 19 and 24; each was in excellent health and had not taken any dietary supplements either during the study or immediately prior to it.What did the study involve?
The study participants were randomly divided into two groups. Thirty minutes before training, one group consumed hydrogen-rich water, while the other group consumed plain water. The test itself consisted of high-intensity judo exercises. Heart rate was recorded at the beginning and end of the workout. Blood samples were taken from the participants three and five minutes after the exercises to determine the pH of their arterial blood. The same procedures were repeated four days later.What do the results show?
At the end of the study, a significant effect of hydrogen-rich water on blood pH and lactate levels was observed. Elevated pH levels were observed in the hydrogen-rich water group, while those in the regular water group were lower. This suggests that hydrogen may act as a “buffering agent” during exercise-induced acidosis. A buffering agent is a chemical substance used to maintain a specific pH level. Lower blood lactate levels were also observed in athletes consuming hydrogen-rich water compared to those consuming regular water. Lactic acid is identified as one of the main causes of fatigue during exercise, as well as post-workout muscle soreness. Thanks to hydrogen’s action as a powerful antioxidant and its anti-inflammatory properties, the body recovers significantly faster.What are the conclusions of the study on the effects of hydrogen-rich water?
Based on the results of this study, as well as numerous others, it has been confirmed that hydrogen-rich water has a beneficial effect on female athletes because:- It aids in the body’s hydration;
- It regulates blood pH;
- It lowers blood lactate levels;
- It improves the body’s recovery;
- It hydrates the body up to 6 times faster than any other type of water;
- It improves muscle function;
- It increases muscle endurance and strength;
- Reduces post-workout muscle fatigue;
- Reduces pain after intense exercise.
